Thunder Client MCP Server

Thunder Client MCP Server official site ↗

Last checked against the official docs:

What it does

The official MCP server for Thunder Client, the API client for VS Code and JetBrains. It lets an AI assistant build Thunder Client collections from your source code or an API spec, create and edit requests (including from a curl command), add tests and scripts, run requests and whole collections, and generate reports. Version 2 was announced on 1 November 2026. The assistant sees environment variable names but not their values, saved auth values are masked, and it does see the response bodies of requests it runs. MIT licensed.

Who it's for

Developers who test APIs with Thunder Client and want Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, Cursor or another agent to write and run those requests and tests for them.

How to set it up

  1. You need Node.js 22 or later, the Thunder Client extension (installed and up to date) and the Thunder Client CLI 2.1.0 or later. Install the CLI and check it:

    bash
    npm i -g @thunderclient/cli@latest
    tc --version
  2. Claude Code or Codex: add the server from your terminal, then restart the tool (run /mcp in Claude Code, or codex mcp list, to check it's connected):

    bash
    claude mcp add thunderclient -- npx -y thunderclient-mcp
    codex mcp add thunderclient -- npx -y thunderclient-mcp
  3. Cursor: add this to .cursor/mcp.json in your project or ~/.cursor/mcp.json for all projects, then restart Cursor. Copilot Chat uses the same block in ~/.copilot/mcp-config.json:

    json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "thunderclient": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": ["-y", "thunderclient-mcp"]
        }
      }
    }
  4. Test it by asking: "Check that Thunder Client is set up for my project." The assistant should report the CLI version, the data path, and your collections and environments. Some things still need the Thunder Client UI: creating and editing environments, AWS and NTLM auth, deleting collections or folders, and SSE, WebSocket and gRPC requests. As of 4 November 2026, the pricing page (thunderclient.com/pricing) lists the MCP server on the Free plan, which allows 10 collections and 50 requests per collection.

Install Thunder Client MCP Server in your client

Runs on your computer. Needs: Node.js 22 or later, plus the Thunder Client extension and CLI (2.1.0 or later). Sign-in or keys: None.

One-click install

These buttons open the app on your computer (it needs to be installed already). The app asks you to confirm before it adds the server: review the command or URL it shows and check it matches the snippet below before you approve.

Claude Code

Run in a terminal

bash
claude mcp add --transport stdio thunderclient -- npx -y thunderclient-mcp

Everything after -- is the server command. Run /mcp inside Claude Code to check it connected.

Fully quit and reopen Claude Desktop after saving.

Cursor

.cursor/mcp.json in a project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json for all projects

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "thunderclient": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "thunderclient-mcp"
      ]
    }
  }
}
VS Code

.vscode/mcp.json (note the top-level "servers" key)

json
{
  "servers": {
    "thunderclient": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
