Sequential Thinking MCP Server

Sequential Thinking MCP Server official site ↗

Last checked against the official docs:

What it does

An official MCP reference server with one tool, sequential_thinking, that lets the model work through a problem as numbered steps. It can revise earlier steps, branch into alternatives and change how many steps it plans as it goes.

Who it's for

People who want the agent to plan out a tricky design or debugging task step by step before it acts.

How to set it up

  1. Install Node.js.

  2. Add to your MCP client config:

    json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "sequential-thinking": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": [
            "-y",
            "@modelcontextprotocol/server-sequential-thinking"
          ]
        }
      }
    }
  3. Or add it from the Codex CLI:

    bash
    codex mcp add sequential-thinking npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-sequential-thinking
  4. On Windows, launch npx through cmd /c (the README shows the exact config).

Check the official Sequential Thinking MCP Server docs for the latest steps.
