Memory MCP Server

Official site ↗

What it does

Reference MCP server that gives an AI basic persistent memory: a local knowledge graph of entities, relations and observations that survives across chats.

Who it's for

People who want their assistant to remember preferences and facts across chats.

How to set it up

  1. Add the server (or run the mcp/memory Docker image). Optionally set MEMORY_FILE_PATH to choose where the memory .jsonl file is stored:

    json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "memory": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": [
            "-y",
            "@modelcontextprotocol/server-memory"
          ],
          "env": {
            "MEMORY_FILE_PATH": "/path/to/custom/memory.jsonl"
          }
        }
      }
    }
  2. Add a system prompt or custom instructions telling the assistant when to save and recall memories. The README includes an example prompt.

Check the official docs for the latest steps.

Example prompts

prompt

prompt
What do you remember about my coding preferences?
prompt
